I always thought I wasn't creative or artistic. I was really good at math and science and have very logical thinking and so didn't think I could do anything like paint.
My brother was a painter, I have a daughter who paints, a son who writes, all very artistic endeavours....
Well COVID-19 happened and by coincidence, a book called "Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear" by Elizabeth Gilbert fell into my lap. She is the same author of "Eat, Pray, Love: one women's search for everything".
Gilbert shows how creativity strikes all the time and you just have to be open to her. I loved the book, it was so inspirational for me at that time.
So let's talk about it..........
Are you like me and don't think you are creative? Well, after reading her book I wrote a poem, she says to try to be passionate about what you write about. So I thought OK, I live in the NT of Australia and it's HOT! In Darwin, it is, especially during the wet season, so when the dragonfly's come out you know the weather is going to change soon.
It's like a release, you are hopeful of more socialising and exercising in better weather and everything that goes with a perfect dry season. So I decided to write a poem. Here it is:
The Dragonfly
You come and I am always delighted,
Being here means that change is on its way,
It is that change that brings me joy,
The Joy of season changing,
Of transition between wet and dry.
You flit on the currents of the wind,
Dashing to and fro, rejoicing,
The clicking of your wings,
and the reflection of their light,
echoes my pleasure.
At times you come alone,
At others, you come with friends,
No matter,
You are always welcome!
Did you like it?.... If you did great if you didn't no matter, I didn't write it for anyone to ready, I wrote it for me, to see if I could, and YES, I could.
Then I thought I would try something else, but what? I have always wanted to try painting, which seemed intimidating, so I went on YouTube and found a video on painting for beginners, in fact, watercolour for beginners, but I was in Nhulunbuy, a very remote place in the NT. They have a supermarket, bank, pharmacy and lots of those shops that sell eclectic items....... but no art shop.
I found a $5 kids watercolour paint set in one of those eclectic shops.....and I was off, it was so much fun. I did lots of it, mostly copying people on YouTube. But when I came back to Darwin I was too busy and let it slide for a while.
Today I felt like paintings, so back to YouTube, I watched a very good tutorial by a lady who teaches a bit of the theory behind watercolour it was wonderful, she then demonstrated a freehand painting using all the things she taught. So I tried a freehand of my own, I thought I'm tired of copying, I want to see if I could do something myself, here is the result.
I am going to put an inspirational word or phrase in the green box. So not quite finished yet. Again, if you like it great, if you don't, it doesn't matter, I am having fun!
So go, try something, you can be creative, just let yer take you on a journey!
