To Procrastinate or Not to Procrastinate?
Well, let's talk about it...........
It's because when I was younger it wasn't about me. It was about my husband and my 4 kids and then it became about other people.....NOT a bad thing!
Simply put, it was about other people. They depended on me to do the job I had said I would do. I had responsibility.
It didn't start that way. It started with not wanting to let people down. I used to say yes to everyone and then let some down. But a very wise woman once told me she couldn't trust my YES!
Wow! At the time she had no idea what she said to me was earth-shattering. I did tell her years later and she does remember the conversation, she was being a true friend! She still is.
So, from there I vowed to only say yes when I could do it. Now you might say this isn't procrastination, that's true, but it's part of it. Busy people get things done, but we often take on too much. It can appear like procrastination.
Today, I am a procrastinator, but that's because of some of my experiences during medical school. My school would often move the goalpost. In the first year, or maybe 6 months, I planned and produced and then updated the product because there was some change and then I stopped. It got me through med school but is not great forever.
Now, I have graduated and am completing my Rural Generalist training. I still Procrastinate.
It annoys me so much..........but every day I am learning more about myself and think I may know how to do something about it.
If you have been reading this blog you will know about multipotenialites and that I am one! We can have so many projects on the go that we forget to do some of them, then guilt sets in, then avoidance, more guilt, well you get the picture.
Emilie Wapnick is the founder of Puttyverse. In her book, 'How to be Everything' she shows us how to overcome this.
Step 1: divide your projects up, into two categories (these are the ones you could be spending time on):
1. priority projects
2. projects in the wings
The difference between the two is, what you have to do and what you want to do! Lol, so hard to choose.
Step 2: start working on priority projects giving them a time allocation.........this is important.
Step 3: as you finish a task add a new one.......or two or three ☺
Sounds simple right! Well for some, yes, for me no. Why? because I have to feel organised, this contributes to that organisation,...... BUT here is where I procrastinate........I organise so much then I don't work on the project themselves.
Do you do this? only me hey.......haha, yeah my children would say so!
The new plan for me is to just start, I am going to work when I am at my best....in the morning and not over organise and see if this helps.
I'll keep you updated with the progress.
Do you have a procrastination problem? Tell me about it......
Can you identify what about your style of procrastination inhibits you from getting on with it?
This may help, check out 'Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator'
